Town Garden, Sherborne
A new glass fronted dining area provides a view over the rear garden. This was a metre above ground level so a terrace needed to be created, extending the dining area outside. The site posed challenges in the form of a tall fire station on one side and fire escape on the other. Solutions were found to screen both sides with pleached hornbeam trees along one boundary and slatted fencing covered with climbers on the other.
The result is a stylish, elegant garden with a contemporary feel. Clear structure and lines contrast with informal, exuberant planting; the romantic is combined with the modern.
Consisting of smart composite decking, the terrace is surrounded by planting retained by white rendered walls. Wide limestone steps lead via a gravel path from the terrace to a West facing limestone patio, providing an area in which to relax in the afternoon and evening and where an outdoor fireplace creates atmosphere in summer evenings.
Garden Paths
Delineated by gravel paths and planting beds, sub-divided areas create the impression of a larger garden. Paths provide the bones of the garden and, in a zig zag fashion, lead from one area to the other, often with focal points at the end. The clients are antique dealers so the garden displays antique or contemporary urns and artefacts as focal points.
Throughout the garden, subtle lighting accentuates the shapes of trees and highlights certain features, creating atmosphere and magical effects, particularly enchanting when viewed from the house.
